The Moles Creative Writing Group

The Moles Logo We're not some secret spies who snoop
Nor do we live in holes;
We're just a friendly writing group
And call ourselves "The Moles."

About Us

We were founded in 1999 through the initiative of the Mole Valley Arts Development Service and known as "The Moles Story-Telling Group." But being naturally creative, the group did more than just tell stories. In 2009, therefore, the name was changed to "The Moles Creative Writing Group." We are, however, generally known simply as "The Moles."

Except for August and December because of holidays, we meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month in Leatherhead, Surrey, in the United Kingdom; in August there is no formal meeting, but one of our members usually organizes an informal lunch or afternoon tea at their house and in December the meeting is brought forward to third Tuesday. Leatherhead is situated on the River Mole, and we take our name from the Mole Valley, the District of Surrey in which we meet.

When we meet, we spend about half the time reading our own compositions to the group on a theme which has been set for "homework" for the month; then, after a break for tea & cakes, we have an exercise set by the chairman for the occasion.

The themes for the year are decided at our AGM held early in January, when we also decide who will chair each meeting (we like to make sure everyone has a turn at this) and the annual fee is set to cover cost of hall hire. For the past few years this has been £20 per annum.

Moles in Lockdown

Since the first coronavirus lockdown in March 2020 we have not able to hold our normal meetings. In March 2020 there was no meeting and Moles simply submitted offerings by email. In April, May, June & July 2020 we met via Zoom. The works produced during these months have been put together in a collection titled "MOLES IN LOCKDOWN" and dedicated to the memory of Sylvia Herbert, one of our founder members, who sadly passed away on 24th April 2020.
